Draft Code of Ethics

So far, our collective effort has resulted in a draft code of ethics. Please use the comment section to comment on this code of ethics.

This blog is part of Professor Bastiaan Vanacker’s Digital Media Ethics course taught at the School of Communication at Loyola University Chicago Spring 2010. The instructor and the sixteen students are responsible for the content of this blog. Students are required to post one blog entry every two weeks and to read and comment on each others’ comments. Other visitors to this blog are welcome and encouraged to comment on the various blog postings.
Students are graded for their blog contributions. Grading criteria are communicated to the students but refer to the frequency, relevance, and structure of blog postings, not to their specific content, which is entirely up to the students and is not a representative of the position and opinions of Loyola University. Each contributor is responsible for his or her content only.
Students were given the liberty to use an alias or pseudonym when writing or commenting. Even though we recognize that accountability is an important value, some students voiced concern about being forced to publicly post something under their own name on the Internet as a condition to receive a good grade in this class. In an educational context this is a valid concern. However, all contributors are members of this class and all contributors commit to maintain high ethical standards when contributing to this blog. When a video or picture could reasonably be considered to be offensive to some, we will provide a disclaimer when linking to the offensive content.

We will follow copyright laws and always give credit to pictures taken from elsewhere.

We will not re-use photos on which we don’t own the copyright unless we have the permission to do so.

We will use pictures and videos to illustrate, not to shame or ridicule.

We will to the best of our ability try to assess the reliability of information before posting it or providing links to it.

If we feel certain content may not be appropriate for publication we will discuss its publication with the other authors of this blog before posting it. If we decide to indeed publish the content we will explain our rationale to our readers.

Blog posts are not edited by the instructor or anyone else before they are posted. If we make a mistake, we will fix it. If the fix merely consists of editing for grammar and style or to clarify a point, the editing will not be visible to the readers. If the correction is because a factual error was made by the author, the editing will be done in a way that makes it clear that the original text has been edited. (strike out)

We will cite our sources.

We will clearly distinguish fact from opinion in our writing.

We will carefully proofread.

We will be each others’ editors.

We will keep our blog up to date.

  1. We might also want to make clear that the blog is for an honest debate and all of our opinions are tolerated and heard– they do not reflect the opinion of the class at large or of Loyola.

  2. I think this is thorough and detailed.

    I do feel that whether or not we will veil an identity is implied by saying, “We will use pictures and videos to illustrate, not to shame or ridicule.”

    Also, the only inclusion I’d like to see is Carla’ suggestion stating that the views expressed are not necessarily those of Loyola or anyone but the author his/herself.

    I know that this class, especially Dr. Vanacker, has worked really hard on shaping and creating this Code of Ethics and I think it’s pretty close to where we want it to be.

  3. This looks really good. I think it also may be helpful to tag things “Not Safe for Work” or “Not Safe for School”, in the event of publishing seemingly explicit material.

  4. Stemming from what ‘allycoop’ wrote…when we are taking our own pictures, they should be done in a public space where people are not specifically identified. Any photos taken in a more private setting should recieve consent of those identified before the picture can be posted.

    Also, in the event that we alter a photo in any way, a description of what we changed should be posted.

  5. I agree this code of ethics sets good ground rules for our blog.

    Also, I feel that carla’s suggestion should be included because, even though students of Loyola, we may have suggestions or postings that may conflict with the grounds on which the University was founded, as we all have different opinions. This can still uphold our school’s values (not saying that we are against them) while still voicing our opinions and allowing those not affiliated with the University to also.

    I do feel like something should be written about keping subject matter relevant to Digital Media Ethics and not veering from that.

  6. Yeah I like Carla’s idea of making it known that the blog is focused on an open debate of digital media ethics and the ideas/opinions do not represent Loyola’s ideas/opinions. As long as each of us keep the code in mind during each of our posts I feel it will be fine. The code of ethics we put together as a class seem complete.

  7. I think our code of ethics looks nearly complete. I also agree that Carla’s comment should be added to make the list more complete. It is important that readers of this blog see us all as independent writers with different opinions.

  8. There should be something about assuming goodwill on the part of the authors. We are bound to come upon some controversial issues, and a poorly worded statement may bring some unnecessary heat into the fray.

  9. I agree with what we have come up with for the code of ethics. I know we touched upon this in class, but I also agree with Kaycie that we should include tags for items with explicit content before the post for readers to be informed.
